The Manchester United players had to pay for their return flights from Stockholm after beating Hammarby in the Champions League.
After beating Hammarby in Stockholm, in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, many players in the Manchester United squad had to pay for their direct flights back to England, according to The Telegraph.
After the spread of this news, the club itself came out to give a kind of explanation and clarified that there were flights for the footballers, but with a stopover in Copenhagen.
In an official statement, the club explained that the team traveled to Sweden on a private charter plane to guarantee the best preparation conditions, staying in the same hotel used by the men's team in its last preseason and training at the facilities of the Swedish Football Association.
“We are confident that we have created the ideal conditions for success on the field around the team and we are proud of the players for their victory,” they expressed.
Regarding the return, the institution clarified that it did not consider another charter necessary since United's next commitment will only be in seven days. In this context, the club covered the tickets for a commercial flight with a connection in Copenhagen for the entire squad and coaching staff, because there were not enough seats available for everyone on a direct flight, as detailed.
However, several members decided to organize alternative trips to other destinations to take advantage of their free days with family and friends.
Finally, United stressed that international transfers for the women's team will be evaluated "on a case-by-case basis" based on the schedule and logistics, ensuring that private flights will be used when necessary, although they also stressed the importance of managing costs "sustainably" in the team development process.
